Banned Pesticides in India
With the increase in adulteration of food, At least a major portion of farmers in India are using toxic carcinogenic chemicals as pesticides, This poses a major risk to consumers as well as the ones spraying it. As concerned citizens of this country, we must put health & safety before profits. Strict measures are to be taken against the companies supplying these harmful chemicals without trails.
Harmful Pesticides banned in India - 2019
The central government of India took action to ban 18 pesticides which were very toxic. The ban applies to registration, import, manufacture, formulation, transport, sale and use of all these pesticides.
We have compiled a list of all the chemicals that are banned as follows :
- Benomyl:- Binomyl binds strongly to the soil, it doesn't dissolve in water. Skin irritation may occur due to this chemical.
- Carbaryl:- The Carbaryl pesticides are made by humans, it is toxic to insects. When an insect touches or eats Carbaryl, It overstimulates their nervous system.
- Diazinon:- Diazinon is a thiophosphoric ester, It is considered to be of relatively high toxicity for vertebrates.
- Fenarimol:- It will be fatal if Fenarimol is inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin. Contact or inhalation of this chemical can cause irritation or burnt skin and eye.
- Fenthion:- Acute poisoning of Fenthion may cause headaches, dizziness, vomiting. If the poisoning is moderate then it can cause breathing difficulty, hypertension, abdominal pain, diarrhea, etc.
- Linuron:- Linurpn is a urea herbicide used control perineal broadleaf and grassy weeds on the crop. It can cause mutation.
- Methoxy Ethyl Mercury Chloride:- This compound is toxic if it gets injected in our body, this compound when discomposes due to heat, it emits highly toxic fumes.
- Methyl Parathion:- Methy Parathion is highly toxic by ingestion and inhalation. The skin which touches this chemical should be washed immediately by soap and water.
- Sodium Cyanide:- Sodium Cyanide release Hydrogen cyanide and it is occasionally used against predatory animal.
- Thiometon:- Thiometon is a colorless oily liquid that is easily soluble in water.
- Tridemorph:- It is used to control Erysiphe graminis, Tridemorph is a fungicide. World Health Organization categorized it as a moderately hazardous pesticide because it is harmful if swallowed and can cause irritation to skin and eyes.
- Alachlor:- It is toxic to aquatic animals and it shouldn't be used near water bodies.
- Dichlorvos:- Dichlorvos is highly toxic if inhalation, absorption or ingestion. It is a very volatile substance so that the inhalation is the most common exposure.
- Phorate:- Phorate is an insecticide and acaricide that controls pests by contact, systematic and fumigant action. It is highly toxic for honeybees.
- Phosphamidon:- Phosphamidon is highly toxic to mammals. Worl Health Organization categorized this in Hazardous class.
- Triazophos:- Acute exposure to Triazophos can cause diseases such as headaches, blurred vision, dizziness, etc.
- Trichlorfon:- Trichlorfon is highly toxic by all routes of exposure. If anyone touches this substance then they can have a problem in respiration, vomiting, diarrhea, abnormal cramps.
The pesticides act of1968 regulates the pesticides in India.
India uses at least 99 pesticides that are banned in other countries. More than one-third of the pesticides used in India are banned in other countries because they are unsafe for the environment and food chain or direct users.
In India, pesticides are regulated under the Pesticides act of 1968. To replace this law a new management bill has been drafted, but experts say that it is largely similar in structure so the ground realities will not change. This law doesn't require the government to conduct regular reviews, on the rare occasion that the government has reviewed these pesticides and ban toxic pesticides. Only the Central government can ban pesticides. The state government can only refuse its license for sales or manufacture or else they can ban temporarily for no longer than 90 days. That means we are exposing to the deadliest sea of pesticides and other harmful chemicals.
